How to set up a Wi-Fi hotspot on your mobile device

This article describes how to set up a Wi-Fi hotspot on a mobile device. You can do this to help troubleshoot networking issues. A Wi-Fi hotspot enables you to connect to your A2 Hosting site from a network outside of your regular home or office network using a cellular data connection.

For example, if your e-mail client is having problems fetching e-mail messages on your network, you can set up a Wi-Fi hotspot. By connecting to the Wi-Fi hotspot (and thereby a different network), you can see if the e-mail client works normally. If it does, then the problem is most likely somewhere in your network.

Setting up a Wi-Fi hotspot

Use the appropriate procedure below for your own mobile device.

Google Android

To set up a Wi-Fi hotspot on a Google Android device, follow these steps:

  1. Tap Settings, and then tap Network & Internet.
  2. Tap Hotspot & Tethering, and then tap Wi-Fi hotspot.
  3. Tap On, and then configure the hotspot:
    • To change the name of the hotspot, tap Hotspot name, type the new name, and then tap OK.
This is the network name that Wi-Fi clients see when they connect to the network.
    • Tap Security, and then tap WPA2-Personal.
    • Tap Hotspot password, type a password, and then tap OK.
This is the password that Wi-Fi clients use to connect to the network.
    • To turn off the hotspot automatically when no devices are connected, tap Turn off hotspot automatically.
  4. The hotspot is now active. You can use another device to connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot and test the connection.
Apple iOS

To set up a Wi-Fi hotspot on an Apple iOS device, follow these steps:

  1. Tap Settings, and then tap Personal Hotspot.
  2. Tap the slider next to Allow Others to Join.
  3. Tap Wi-Fi Password, type a password, and then tap Done.
This is the password that Wi-Fi clients use to connect to the network.
  4. The hotspot is now active. You can use another device to connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot and test the connection.
The hotspot name is the same as the device name. To change the device name (and the corresponding name that clients see when they connect to the hotspot), follow these steps:
    1. Tap Settings, tap General, and then tap About.
    2. Tap the name of the device.
    3. Type the new name for the device, and then tap Done.
